The screenplay was written by Kanika Dhillon and Apurva Asrani, while the music was composed by Amit Trivedi. The film stars Rajkummar Rao and Pankaj Tripathi in lead roles. The film is a love story set in Bareilly between Barfi, a hearing-impaired man, and Shruti played by Kriti Sanon. The story begins in a small Indian town called Bareilly where Shruti Mathur alias Barfi happens to see the deaf and mute boy named Barfi who was tied on an electricity pole on seeing which she gets annoyed. It is then revealed that Barfi has been diagnosed with acute hearing impairment at the age of six months by doctors, who had advised his parents to bring him up as if he were normal so that he could have a better life. Barfi's father, a shopkeeper, had been very happy with the decision taken by the doctors and hence he brought up Barfi as a normal boy. While going to school on a rainy day, Barfi sees Shruti struggling to take her umbrella on her head and opens an umbrella over her despite his hearing impairment. Shruti returns the favour by giving him a pen drive containing a movie for him to see it. The two become friends but Barfi doesn't tell Shruti that he is deaf and mute as she would never spend time with him if she knew this fact. As days go by, Shruti and Barfi become very close and gradually develop feelings for each other. A new tenant, Nandu (Pankaj Tripathi), comes to their home as a paying guest where he develops an attraction towards Shruti. Meanwhile, Barfi realises that he has developed some feelings for Shruti as well. He soon confesses his love to Shruti only to find out that she is already in a relationship with Nandu. On the occasion of Republic Day, Barfi gets a chance to go on stage with the band along with Shruti and this time he confesses his love to her in front of everyone.
